Minor boy rescued from manhole

MUZAFFARGARH: A minor boy fell into an open manhole here on Monday evening on Jhang Mor road and locals rescued him.

Reports said five-yearold Muhammad Ishaq fell into an open manhole and locals pulled him out.

After the incident, the local government secretary suspended municipal committee chief officer Hamid Raza Khan from service on the orders of Commissioner Dera Ghazi Khan Dr Nasir Mahmood.

He was accused of inefficiency, misconduct and negligence and action was taken under section 6 of Punjab Employees Efficiency, Discipline and Accountability Act 2006.

The alleged incompetence of municipal corporation officials can be gauged from the fact many manhole covers in the city have been missing for a long time. Additional deputy commissioner Imran Shams off and on contacted chief officer Hamid Khan and EXEN Mujahid and they did not address the issue.

According to Imran Shams, many manhole covers were stolen by thieves.

Sources said Hamid Khan was allegedly involved in embezzlement of sewerage contracts worth Rs25 million and he awarded the contracts to a blacklisted firm.

Earlier, the anti-corruption establishment had arrested district council ex-chief officer and former DO finance and they were in jail on charges of embezzlement of funds.
