GUJRAT: A 65-yearold man was gunned down by an alleged human trafficker and his accomplices for lodging a complaint against him with the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in Teero Chak village of Gulliana police precincts on Tuesday.
Reports said Gulzar Ahmed had lodged a complaint with the Gujrat circle FIA that Waqas Ahmed, of Heeragarh village, had taken a sum of Rs700,000 from him for sending his son abroad but he neither fulfilled his commitment nor was ready to return the money.
The FIA summoned both the parties for an initial investigation.
On Tuesday, the complainant was going to attend the investigation when Waqas along with five accomplices intercepted him in the village and opened fire on him.
Gulzar sustained serious injuries while the assailants fled the scene.
The injured man succumbed to his bullet wounds while being shifted to Kharian Tehsil Headquarters Hospital where doctors later conducted his autopsy. Police have registered a case against four nominated and two unidentified suspects under sections 302, 148 and 149 of the Pakistan Penal Code on the report of Gulzar`s son Jabbar Ahmed and started investigation.
Meanwhile, Gujrat District Police Officer Asad Muzaffar on Tuesday posted new station house officers at 10 police stations of the district. These posts hadbeen lying vacant for the last couple of weeks.
Inspector Shahbaz Hanjra, who was suspended from service on the charge of recording a video of suspect Naveed Araen in Wazirabad gun attack case, has been posted at Kharian Saddar SHO police station.
He was Gujrat Saddar SHO when he was suspended from service in November the last.
PLANTATION: A plantation awareness campaign was launched at Hafiz Hayat Campus of the University of Gujrat (UoG) on Tuesday in collaboration with the Gujrat Forest Division.
The campaign organised by the Warden Office Boys Hostel marked the start of the spring tree plantation under the slogan of `Dream UoG -Green UoG` and was inaugurated by Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Shabbar Atig by planting a sapling in the front lawn of the boys hostel.
Pro Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Mushahid Anwar, Director of the School of Art, Design and Architecture Asif Sharif, senior academics and administration officials and a large number of students participated in the campaign by planting saplings.
Addressing the ceremony, the VC highlighted the importance of trees in country`s social, economic and environment life.
He urged the students to promote awareness among the masses about the benefits of planting more and more trees because `it is our shared national responsibility`.
