ADDRESSING MISCARRIAGES OF JUSTICE IN THE DEATH PENALTY
Each year hundreds of people are sentenced to death. However, the weight of the death penalty is disproportionally carried by the poor, marginalized and those with inadequate legal representation.
Prolonged incarcerations and the high number of prisoners on death row in Pakistan point at weaknesses in the current criminal justice system which are in dire violation of the fundamental right to life and liberty (Art.3 UDHR).
For more than three decades, AGHS has helped vulnerable death row convicts prove their innocence in the criminal justice system and escape the death penalty. We provide free legal aid to disadvantaged members of society and strategically utilize our resources to safeguard the rights of those facing the death penalty. AGHS has saved the lives of dozens of prisoners including those with mental disorders, juveniles and persons convicted of blasphemy by helping them not only reduce their sentence but also gain their freedom and lives.
